Waylight
Electronics design and software development for an industrial lighting solution used in the Amsterdam IJboulevard bike storage facility.
RS485 half-duplex
The core element of the lighting module is a 48V DC block that can power a string of LEDs. It communicates over a half-duplex RS485 using RJ45 connectors.
The communication interface is galvanically isolated from the rest of the system, as the communication string and the power supply powering the lights must be fully independent.
The communication interface employs a Carrier-Sense Multiple Access Collision with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) protocol named Kiri.
Ethernet MQTT bridge
We developed a separate device to interface the RS485 network to ethernet as an MQTT client. This bridge uses the same microcontroller as the lighting, and has an ethernet interface thanks to the W5500 chipset.
The MQTT client is an open-source Rust crate specifically made for the W5500.
Assembled by JLCPCB
Production of all hardware was completely & supremely cost-effectively handled by JLCPCB’s assembly service. The devices were designed for optimum manufacturability given JLCPCB’s constraints and this resulted less than 1% production defects.
